Overview of the Silkworm Genome Research Program
・Construction of the silkworm genome map
Molecular linkage maps of the silkworm (Bombyx mori) will be improved and upgraded by accumulating further information that becomes available from genomic analyses including cross-breeding experiments. Physical maps will be constructed by assembling cloned DNA fragments stored as BAC (bacteria artificial chromosome) libraries into contiguous chromosome segments.
→ BombMap: (Bombyx mori genome Map information System)
・Development of methods to apply the silkworm genome map
To ascertain the promoter activities of genes introduced into the silkworm genome, an analysis system will be established using GFP (green fluorescent protein) as a reporter. Quantitative trait loci that are considered to control many of the important traits in silkworms will be explored to contribute to the development of efficient breeding methods.
・Identification of particular genes in insects and analysis of their functions
Patricular genes controlling functions such as nitrogen metabolism, expression of antibacterial peptides, development of the germline, immunity against insect viruses, relationships with symbionts, etc., will be analyzed in the silkworm and other insects.
